SERVPRO of Carrollton provides disaster response and damage restoration services that help communities recover from hurricane damage. A prime example of SERVPRO’s disaster response was on display in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Hurricane Harvey and SERVPRO’s Disaster Response
On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey slammed into the coast of Texas, causing $125 billion in property damage and disrupting the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents in the Houston and greater South Texas area. The slow-moving giant brought devastating flooding to the area. Two feet of rain fell in the first 24 hours after the storm made landfall. A measuring site near Jack Brooks Regional Airport recorded 64.58 inches of rainfall, breaking the total rainfall record for a single storm in the continental US. The storm’s footprint covered an estimated 28,949 square miles. The lumbering storm-damaged 204,000 homes, three-fourths of which were outside of the 100-year flood plain. Thirteen million people were impacted by the hurricane.
The Category 4 hurricane had sustained winds of 130 mph and posted wind gusts of up to 140 mph. Hurricane Harvey is the second costliest natural disaster in US history, surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina ($161 billion), which hit the Gulf Coast from August 23 through August 31, 2005.
FEMA referred to the outpouring of aid as a “Historic Disaster Response.” According to FEMA, “The Coast Guard deployed 2,060 personnel, 50 aircraft, 75 boats, and 29 cutters, rescuing 11,022 people and 1,384 pets. FEMA assigned 28 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams from across the nation to deploy to Texas to assist state and local agencies with the lifesaving mission.”
An estimated 43,000 people needed food and shelter after the storm. Dallas set up a mega-shelter that could accommodate 5,000 people.
SERVPRO launched a massive response to deliver storm and flood damage cleanup and restoration services to the disaster-stricken region. A corporate press release described the restoration franchise’s large-scale response to Hurricane Harvey, stating, “SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team has been activated to help residents and business owners in storm-damaged areas on the Texas coast, throughout the Houston area, and in western Louisiana. SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Teams will be assisting the 121 local Franchises already located in the affected areas. SERVPRO has more than 1,000 crews ready to mobilize, with nearly 300 crews already on the ground ready to assist home and business owners.”
